Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (37) and his team’s manager Maroof have been slapped with a penalty of Rs 15 lakh each in connection with the recovery of huge amount of foreign currencies from them.

The duo will be allowed to leave India only after they pay the penalty imposed on them by the customs department, official sources said.

They have been charged with violating provisions of the FEMA and Customs Act by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after completion of its probe.

The DRI had detained Rahat along with his  16-member troupe at Indira Gandhi International Airport on February 13 with allegedly undeclared amount of $ 1.24 lakh and some other instruments too in foreign currency. The DRI had questioned Rahat and Maroof about the money recovered and payments received during their shows in the country and the mode of money transfer.

Rahat was released later on February 14 after hours of interrogation by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence but his passport and other documents remained confiscated.

The probe against event manager Chitresh Shrivastava, who is still under detention, and two foreign exchange dealers of Mumbai, will continue, sources said.
